TAG | intrauterine device
Many women may shudder at the thought of an intrauterine device (IUD), but, like pills , IUDs have come a long way since they first hit the contraceptive market. Early IUDs reached their heyday in the 1970s, when they were the contraceptive choice of as many as 10 percent of women of childbearing age in the United States. Due to some cases of IUD-related sterility later in the decade, IUDs were withdrawn from the market entirely. If you’re uncertain about IUDs, rest assured that today’s IUDs are a far cry from the earlier Dalkon shield, which was the object of multi-million dollar sterility-related lawsuits.
