In 1922, a nurse named Rene Caisse was working in an Ontario, Canada hospital when she met an elderly patient with a badly scarred breast. The woman explained that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer 30 years earlier. Breast surgery had been recommended to her, but she had declined it. Instead, she accepted treatment from a Native American friend, and Ojibwa medicine man, who gave her the herbal tea recipe and showed her how to make it.
